PRACTICE AS JOSEPH PILATES INTENDED
Pilates is currently everywhere, with mat and Reformer classes booming and studios seemingly popping up on every street corner. However, the complete Pilates method goes beyond a single piece of equipment; instead, it involves working across mixed apparatus, most often in private or semi-private settings. This is how Joseph Pilates himself taught the work (then called Contrology) at his New York studio, which also operated as an open gym.*
At my Manchester city centre studio, located on Lower Ormond Street close to Oxford Road Station (click here for Google Maps location), I teach across a range of large apparatus – Reformer, Tower, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector and Mat (traditional equipment invented by Joseph Pilates himself) – with an emphasis on precision, form and deep technical cueing. Private sessions can also be taken over Zoom, working with apparatus of your choice.
While group classes are brilliant and absolutely have their place (especially on a social and accountability level), private sessions enable you to experience a whole other level of depth and precision. PRIVATE (1-1) SESSIONS
Private Pilates sessions are great for everybody, regardless of age, gender or ability. I work with beginners, advanced practitioners, fellow teachers, desk workers, athletes, people rehabbing injury or managing chronic pain, and more.
You might be looking to build a specific skill in a sport you play or to reduce pain in daily life (see below links). You may wish to improve your posture, or gain better mobility, or simply move and feel better in your day-to-day life. Perhaps you just love Pilates and want to dig a little deeper into the work. Whatever your aim, the beauty of 1-1 sessions is that the method is tailored to your individual needs.
We’ll begin with a chat about your history and aims, then work collaboratively to use the Pilates method in a way that best suits you. With my eyes on you, delivering verbal and hands-on cues (at your discretion), you can be confident that you will be working in the safest, most effective and efficient manner.
Private sessions are taken by many clients on a weekly basis, but they can also be taken on an ad hoc basis – whether alongside regular group classes, or as a support to other sports or modalities. Working 1-1 enables beginners to learn the foundations in a supportive environment, while advanced practitioners get the opportunity to be guided through some of the more challenging work under a watchful eye.

SEMI-PRIVATE (2-1) SESSIONS
Semi-privates are available for more experienced clients. These are booked by one client on behalf of both attendees, and are taught across mixed apparatus, with each client working on separate equipment, doing different work. They’re a fantastic way to go deeper into the practice and explore the method under your own steam.
There is more autonomy than in a 1-1 session, as the teacher moves between two clients; typically, both clients will be doing totally different sessions in the shared space, and there will be moments where each client is left alone to practise. Solid understanding of the fundamentals is therefore needed, not only on a safety level, but also to ensure clients get the most out do the sessions.
At a minimum, both clients are required have taken at least four private (1-1) sessions first, however the exact number of prerequisite sessions may vary according to individual needs; this is at the discretion of the teacher. Similarly, semi-privates may not be suitable for every client.

FIXED REGULAR SLOTS: If you’d like to take regular private sessions at a set time, and you are happy to commit to this on an ongoing basis, your time slot will be removed from the public calendar so it cannot be booked by others. Advance payment by way of a four-class block purchase is required to secure your slot. Please get in touch for further information.
*One exception is the matwork, which Joseph Pilates DID teach to groups! I also teach group mat classes (over Zoom) which you can find out more about here.
