PILATES FOR INJURIES & REHABILITATION
PILATES FOR INJURY RECOVERY & PAIN MANAGEMENT
Pilates is widely used as a recovery tool to help rebuild strength, stability and range of motion in a way that’s progressive, low-impact, and adapted to the individual. As such, I offer one-to-one sessions tailored to support clients’ rehabilitation, whether recovering from surgery, managing chronic pain, or working through a recurring issue.
I completed my 500 hour comprehensive certification through BASI Pilates, which is an internationally recognised Pilates training school with headquarters in California, known for its rigorous, anatomically-informed approach. BASI training stresses working to the person in front of you, with a strong emphasis on technique and precision, while working through all planes of motion in to achieve balance in the body.
I am qualified to teach across full apparatus, and I approach Pilates as a full system as opposed to singular exercises or pieces of equipment. This means the work can be truly adapted to the individual at any level.
Supportive, individualised movement
Sessions are shaped around the needs of the client, from early-stage recovery through to rebuilding full-body strength and function. In a typical session we’ll work across the full studio set-up (Reformer, Tower, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, Mat and props), to create the right amount of challenge and support for your stage of rehab.
Some clients come in straight after finishing physiotherapy, while others are years down the line, simply looking to manage pain and move without fear or discomfort. Wherever you’re at, our focus will be steady, functional progress. There will be no pushing through pain or rushing the process.
In terms of the work itself, I approach the body as a whole, interconnected system that must be balanced in order to work efficiently. Someone might come in with a hip issue, but I’ll still work them through a full body session, both strengthening and mobilising through all planes of motion. Clients are often surprised that pain in one localised area can be resolved by strengthening elsewhere in the body, once it’s been established that the pain is a result of imbalance or compensation in the body.
Clients who come to me for injury rehabilitation often end up staying on as a regular client even when the issue has been resolved, as they tend to find that the practice offers brilliant complementary support for other sports and everyday life, especially in terms of maintaining pain-free movement, body awareness and injury prevention.
Conditions I commonly work with include:
Movement after illness or long-term fatigue
Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD)
Scoliosis and spinal conditions
Hip, knee and lower back pain
Recovery from ankle injuries
Shoulder injuries and instability
Postnatal recovery
Neck and postural tension
Repetitive strain injuries
GUIDANCE FROM HEALTHCARE professionals
When a client comes to me with a history of pain or injury, I always ask for notes or guidance from a healthcare professional, which I then use to inform my programming. As such, it’s helpful to have this information in place before making initial contact.
In addition, I’m always open to working alongside your physiotherapist, osteopath or doctor if you’d like a joined-up approach to your care. With your consent, I can stay in contact with them to make sure your Pilates programme complements the rest of your recovery plan.
